About Diamond Queen
Many of today’s popular slot machines have something of a fairy-tale theme – think Rainbow Riches – Pots of Gold for instance. Diamond Queen definitely has something of the magical and mystical about it with wizards and treasure adorning the reels. What it doesn’t do is go to far and shove sticky saccharine symbols down your throat or use story elements to pin the game down. Nicely balanced without the suggestion of knights riding white horses or prince charmings, this is a a title that should go down well with both the slot playing boys and the girls.
The Diamond Queen base-game uses a standard Las Vegas set up. It’s probably the most well-known arrangement out there consisting of a five reel, fifteen stop space, twenty pay-line set up that gives you loads of chances to win. We’ve not done a full pay-table analysis on it either, but after just a quick glance we can say that this is slot is a very good payer. When it comes to special symbols you’re looking at the Diamond Queen wild, which acts by substituting for other symbols in combinations and the bonus scatter, which pays out a double stake win for two symbols anywhere on the reels and gives access to the feature if you can hit three.
Musically Diamond Queen uses what sounds like a new version of the classic IGT music. This theme will be familiar to players of games like Wolf Run and even newer slots like Cats. However, it’s been re-done with twinkling tones that set it apart from previous incarnations, adding something to the atmosphere and theme of the game. As we mentioned, you access the special bonus round in Diamond Queen by stopping in three of the Mystical Diamond Bonus scatters, which are only available on the middle three reels. This takes you to a second set of reels, giving you access to the same pay-table that you get in the standard base-game.
Here you get three free spins. This bonus uses what’s known as guaranteed locked wild reels. In the first spin, the second reel is completely wild, in the second spin, reels two and three are wild and in the third spin, all the middle reels are wild. Needless to say, you’re going to win big on most of these spins. There’s also an additional symbol on the first reel – an extra spin symbol that does what it says – gives you an extra spin at the same level at which the bonus is set when you stop it in.
The only problem here is how much cash did it take you to hit the bonus feature, and have IGT made Diamond Queen a little stingy in the reel game to account for this uber-paying free spin bonanza? This is a criticism that’s often levelled at many a slot machine, and I often feel it’s a little unfair. You can’t predict where and when the random number generator will give you a bonus, or even a high paying win spin – it’s just going to happen and is really down to luck. As a great man once wrote – playing slots and not believing in luck is like going to church and not believing in god.
