X-Men is one of the Playtech Marvel slots. It features 25 pay-lines of slamming base game action spread over five reels and fifteen stop spaces. You’ve got a special symbol in the form of the X-Men scatter, which will get you into the free spin game, and a wild symbol that’ll help you complete those all important winning combinations.
Graphically X-Men is a excellently produced slot machine. The reel symbols are well animated with different coloured backdrops to help you sort the good guys from the bad. The reel background is a little disappointing however, with the reels sitting in a black screen – but then some players may argue this allows you to focus in on the base-game action.
Whilst we’re on the subject of symbols and reels – you can stop in a group of heroes, and these can be any combination of the hero symbols, in the central X on the middle three reels to receive and instant pay-out of five times your total stake. This can include a wild symbol. This is a great little feature that will help you rack up the reel wins.
One place where the X-Men slot machine doesn’t really excel is in the sound department. This machine is lacking in good, quality audio and we don’t know why. This machine really would be one of the most crazy games ever if only Playtech could have pulled in some awesome aural effects to go with the reel action.
If you’ve ever seen the short X-Men animated series cartoon show, then you’ll know what we’re talking about – the ident from this would have been superb. Instead what you’ve got is a bunch of carnival style casino noises that are totally generic. You missed a trick, guys.
As we mentioned there is a free spin round here, activated unsurprisingly by the three scatters on the grid formula. There are two sets of reels used for this bonus. The hero reels, which group together all the blue hero symbols, and the villains reels – which do the same for the red bad guy symbols. The hero reels have one red Magneto wild on the middle reel and the villain reels have one blue Professor X wild in a similar position.
You start the game off on the hero reels where you’ll get unlimited spins – hit Magneto however and you’re over to the villain reels where you’ll only get 8 spins. Never fear however, as if you stop Professor X in again then you’re back to the hero reels, although next time you return to the villain reels you’ll play from the same remaining spin count as you had when you left them.
Finally, X-Men gives you access to the Marvel Superhero jackpot game. This is a randomly awarded feature that can land in after any spin – and it doesn’t have to be a winning spin either. This takes you into a special jackpot where you pick squares off a grid. The squares reveal symbols and hitting three similar symbols pays you the associated jackpot. The bigger the jackpot – the harder the prize is to hit.
Slot Professor Says
I'm sold on the reel action available from Playtech's X-Men. The game could have got away with using photos from the film and that's really where I would liked to have seen this game start off – but then I guess Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman weren't that cheap when it comes to paying them off for the use of their images. Still, if you squint a bit the reel symbols do kind of look like the characters from the film. All good stuff.
Moving on to the reel action, there's a lot going on in X-Men. I've often been one to criticise slot machines for packing a free spin formula and the lack of ingenuity that's needed to come up with this ubiquitous format. However, I am suitably satisfied that Playtech have done a good job here with their version of this slot machine staple. Splitting the reel symbols down the middle and adding an unlimited free spin feature really does add a new dimension here. Well done guys.
Saying all of this X-Men still isn't a stand-out game. It performs well on all fronts but lacks that certain something that really grabs you in a casino manner. I like the fact there's four progressive jackpots and I like the overall feel of the game. What's it lacking? Perhaps that real big money atmosphere – I think this title is in some ways a bit too cool, dark and geeky for its own good. It may have performed well a few years ago when the film franchise was still floating round people's heads, but these days it just looks a bit past it.
