As you’d expect with a slot machine that’s uses a video game as its source material, Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword is a good looking slot machine. There’s all the cool graphics from the series including some rather sultry looking pictures of Lara looking out from the reels. Although she appears several times on the reels, her portrait is the best symbol to stop in as this forms the slot machine’s wild.

The Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword’s base-game is a thirty line casino slot format that works well. Even though it’s quite a low volatility game, you can still pick up some big prizes in the reels. These are accentuated with nice sonics, including digitised speech when you start to hit the bonus activation symbols and the old accelerating reels gimmick for the free spin round.

There are three bonus features available in Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword. The first two revolve around the free spin game. There’s the randomly awarded Super Mode feature. This is pretty rare so don’t get too excited about it, but when it does eventually hit you’re in for a flurry of prizes.

This feature gives you five free spins with multiple wilds locked in place. If you pick up more wilds then they’ll also lock in place for the duration of this round. The only downer is that you can’t enter either of the other two bonus features from within this round.

Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword’s second free spin bonus is the standard free spin game. Hit three or more of the bonus activating Excalibur scatters to take you into this round, where you’ll get 10 free spins for openers. Here there’s a cascading reel system, which Microgaming call Rolling Reels. Here if you hit a combination, the winning symbols will disappear, leaving spaces for new ones to drop in from above making new combinations.

The first combination is paid at the normal value, but the second combination is paid out with a 2x multiplier. This increases with subsequent combinations up to a maximum of 5x.

The final feature in Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword is by far the best. It’s the Global Adventure Bonus Game. To get into this round you’ll need to stop in a passport symbol once in the central position of each reel, which turns the reel blue for the duration of the game until you get into the bonus. You have to turn all five reels blue and then it’s off to the second screen to see what prizes you can win.

Here you’ll be given a choice of five different locations, each of which contains a very similar bonus game. In order to win the jackpot prize you’ll need to visit all of these, so the order you choose them in is irrelevant. Each bonus round will see you picking a number of pots, vases, coffins or similar archaeological items.

Two will contain traps, and the rest prizes, with one holding a fragment of the sword that gives Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword it’s name. Collect the sword fragment and you’re onto the next location, but avoid picking up two traps or your game could be over. Sometimes when you hit two traps, there’s another bit of second screen action where you’ll have a gun fight with Rebecca, your nemesis, and if you can take all her energy then you can continue in the bonus as if nothing had happened. If you are lucky enough to get all five pieces of the sword then you win the game’s jackpot.

Slot Professor Says

Yeah the Tomb Raider II: Secret of the Sword slot gives you a lot of action. I was never a big fan of the video games, nor the Angelina Jolie films, which you might find surprising for a man who spends as much time in front of a keyboard as I do. However, this pixelated princess finally endeared herself to me with the Secret of the Sword slot machine.

As far as games go, this one's so stacked with bonus features that I had to wonder if it ever paid out in the standard base game. I was more than pleasantly surprised however to find that the wins come really quickly off the reels. Although you do have to wait to get into the bonuses to hit the big money. I do like the second screen Global Adventure Bonus Round, but it can be a bit of a wind up. You can turn four out of the five reels blue, then you're just sitting there waiting for the final bonus to hit, doing in all your bankroll on a feature that might not come. They're so clever those designers at Microgaming, they know how to squeeze every last credit out of you.

My favourite bonus in this game is the free spin round as you seem to get a better idea of where you are with it. This is full of fast paced action and when you hit a big cascade it can pay and pay and pay. You only need that one good spin to really set you up in this bonus.
