Thunderstruck II

The Thunderstruck II Slot Machine is a Norse god inspired mega-slot from the masters of slot machine magic Microgaming. If you thought the original Thunderstruck was good, well things just got a whole lot better.

Firstly, as ever I’ll take a quick look at the graphics and sonics. The visuals on this game are absolutely spot on, with big chunky reel symbols that look like they could have been carved out of stone, and quality animations for all the picture symbols on the reels.

Thunderstruck II’s slot sonics are also spot on with a slightly sad melody playing in the background as you take your spins that somehow lends the action an almost epic quality. This all changes when you hit a big win or get into the bonus round, as Sammy Hagar himself steps out from behind the reels and hits you with a visceral guitar riff worthy of the moment, as you literally rock out with the wins.

The standard reel game is pretty cool for such a hot slot. Thunderstruck II gives you a fantastic 243 ways to win across its five reels, which means you basically win for any combination you get across the reels. The Thunderstruck II signature wild is able to count multiple times in different wins and it will also double the value of said wins, which ain’t half bad.

There’s also the Wildstorm feature, where the slot machine weather can suddenly change, dancing lightning across the game’s reels turning them completely wild. You’re obviously getting the picture that this is a pretty well produced slot machine, and you certainly wouldn’t be wrong for thinking this, however Microgaming really ratchet the action up a big notch when it comes to the free spin bonus round.  Stop in three of the classic bonus feature scatters anywhere on the reels to activate this feature.

Now the big catch to Thunderstruck II is that by activating the bonus multiple times you open up different features. The game comes with the Valkyrie bonus, which gives you 10 free spins where all wins are subject to a 5x multiplier. Not bad when you consider this bonus can be fully re-triggered by stopping in more bonus wilds.

After the fifth trigger of the bonus round, you can select the Loki free spin bonus. This gives you 15 free spins with the Wild Magic symbol. This special wild has the power to change  other symbols onto the reels into the signature Thunderstruck II wild, which will also multiply combination wins, remember. Here stopping in the bonus scatters will re-trigger the round at a lower level, for instance two scatters will give one free spin, three scatters, two free spins and so on.

Hit ten or more bonus rounds and you’ll be looking at the Odin free spin round. We’re a bit bemused as to why this god isn’t the top feature award as he was King of the Norse Gods, but we’re not going to quibble over titles here. This Thunderstruck II free spin round awards you with 15 free spins and the option to summon down Odin’s wild magic ravens onto the reels. There’s a 2x multiplier bird and a 3x, so if you’re lucky enough to hit two birds on the same reels then you could be looking at a top multiplier of 6x the normal reel award.

The top bonus is the Thor free spin round, this is available after the fifteenth trigger of the bonus feature. This gives you 25 free spins with Rolling Reels, which takes its inspiration from the Tumbling Reels feature (sorry IGT if we just stepped on your copyright) which is apparent in games like Da Vinci Diamonds and Gonzo’s Quest.

Here if you hit a winning combination, it will explode and more symbols will drop down into the Thunderstruck II reels, allowing you to hit more combinations. The only thing is, the second set of combinations will be awarded at a 2x bonus. The third set, should you get that far, will be a 3x bonus and so on, up to a maximum of 5x the normal reel award.

There’s also a new feature that’s just been added by Microgaming. You can win extra cash for completing pay-table achievements. Here you receive a bonus for stopping in all of a symbols different combinations (for instance, three, four and five ace symbols). The more symbol combinations you mark off on the pay-table, the bigger the rewards available from the machine.

Finally, all these unlock-able features carry over from session to session. You don’t have to unlock them all in one sitting at the slot machine, thank god. Just be sure you don’t clear out your cookies all you’ll lose your progress in the game, which would be more than tragic.

Slot Professor Says

Wow Thunderstruck II... Well, it's sure got a lot of fans out there and a lot of money goes through this game's reels on a daily basis. I like to be the kind of guy who tries to spoil the milk on many an occasion, and dig my heels in just to be different, but what can I say, I love this slot machine too.

There's so much going on with Thunderstruck II, it almost cost me my marriage. I kept on returning to its reels late at night, for just one more spin to see what was going to happen next in the free spin round. It got even worse when they introduced the new pay-table achievements feature, as I just had to get all the combinations. Now I've never been addicted to crack, but somehow I imagine that this slot machine creates an altogether similar experience. It's just so damn good.

My only problem with Thunderstruck II is that it's all about the bonus rounds right? I mean there's some good action going on with the base game, but the Wild Storm feature seems to happen as often as rain over Ethiopia. You want to get into the bonus round as often as possible, because this is where the big wins are, well I'm sorry to say that the activation frequency is very low. It seems to hit about one in a hundred spins.

Never the less, this is still a great slot machine that does have a lot of good balance in the reels, its just one of those that you're going to have to play for several sessions to get the very best out of it. My personal strategy on this one was to play it at low stakes until you've unlocked all the bonus features and then once the whole game has been opened up, then start pumping in the real cash. It's the smart thing to do here.
