Everyone is more than familiar with the legendary movie Psycho. This classic 1950s film is ingrained into the mind of every baby boomer and is certainly known by the plaid trouser crew that frequent the casino floors of Las Vegas all year round. NextGen produced a very passable slot version of this archetypal cinema presentation in 2015, wowing audiences with it big multiplier action and free spin round.

Looking at the Psycho presentation, there’s many elements that combine to give the game a very spooky front end. The reels are full of classic motifs from the film and the grid itself is set in the shadow of a run-down hotel, complete with flickering light that also doubles up to spell out the various wild multipliers on offer. The sound however is the real killer blow in the mix, giving you that vital burst of ambience and anxiety as you progress through the spins.

The Psycho base game uses a classic five reel set up with twenty five pay-lines. It’s a simple set up until you start looking at the wild symbols. Land any win featuring a wild and you’ll get paid out with a multiplier that could range between 1x and 20x. In addition to this there’s an extra feature that can trigger at any time and land a bunch of wilds on the grid increasing your winning potential. Finally as with many popular slot games hit three or more scatters to gain access into the bonus round.

Take any small win from the reels of Psycho and risk it on the classic card flip game that’s well known to any gambler. Guess the correct colour of an ace turned straight from the pack and you’ll be able to double your money, and if you can guess the suit you can earn yourself a quadruple return. Once you’ve made your wager, if you’re successful you can risk it all again or depart with your prize.

Stop in three or more of the special bonus scatters anywhere in view on the base game grid to gain entry into the slot’s free spin round. This takes place on a second set of reels with increased multipliers. Here you can earn a maximum 40x boost to any prize paying combination you happen to land with a wild symbol making this one of the most potentially lucrative bonus rounds you’ll come over on any slot. In addition to all the top notch cash grabbing action you can even re-trigger the bonus adding a bunch more spins to your count.

Slot Professor Says

If you like your slots with a slice of the dark then Psycho is a great game for you. Released around 2015, it seemed to follow a trend at the time for horror based machines like Net Entertainment’s Dracula. However for me the reel art and overall presentation of the game seems a little rushed, which is strange for such a big license, unless it’s simply a case of Universal trying to squeeze the last little drop of blood out of the franchise.

So, cosmetics aside what do I think of the action on offer from Psycho? This is definitely a great game to play and the inclusion of the random wild multipliers takes the idea of a variable system used in slots like Zuma and turns up the volume to the proverbial ten plus one. This means that even the smallest wins on the reels to feature a wild can become monster prizes, but it also means that much of the game is dependent on your luck with the multipliers as well as hitting the right combos on the reels.

The bonus game on Psycho has as many random elements as the base game. As you’re still largely dependent on hitting the right multiplier to make the biggest money, so other than not having to pay for your spins this is not quite the hugely exciting feature round that you could hope to play. Instead what you’re looking at is a good balance of fun throughout every aspect of the game that works well to provide a fun experience.
