Monopoly – The Dream Life is another machine in the great Monopoly slots series from IGT. It was released shortly after the extra Level Up update to Monopoly Plus and offers players quite a different experience from any of its sister titles. You’ve got a classic base-game set up that uses the Tumbling Reels feature that many slot masters and mistresses will already know from games like Pixies of the Forest and Da Vinci Diamonds blended with a load of red hot action that’s available in the superb free spin bonus round.
The visuals on Monopoly – The Dream Life are simply stunning. This slot is set in an Art Deco styled background that harks back to the opulent glory days of the 1950s. This features all the popular property motifs from the famous board game, helping set the right kind of scene for the base-game action. The overall look here is surprisingly free from design touches, which uses a black background to support the game’s symbol set. There’s no reliance on poker symbols on this machine, which sticks rigidly to Monopoly icons with which you can hit your winning combinations.
In the Monopoly – The Dream Life’s base-game you get twenty pay-lines spread across a fairly standard five reel set up. In order to help you complete your winning combinations you get a wild in the form of a money-bag and a bonus symbol, which only appears on the first three reels. In addition to all this regular stuff you get to take advantage of a special cascading system known as Tumbling Reels. Here any winning combination you hit will pay you out a prize before the symbols disappear leaving spaces into which the symbols above can drop. Any new combinations you hit will re-trigger this mechanism, allowing you to go on big pay-out streaks off a single spin.
Audio-wise Monopoly – The Dream Life is a really hot production. From the moment you load it up you’ll hear the bustling sound of the Metropolis punctuated by car noises, police whistles, passing air-craft and the occasional burst of love-lorn, haunting saxophone. This is complimented perfectly with the reel spin noise as the symbols gently clink into place. Hit wins for a short hit of jazz and as ever, if you want the big sound-track then all you have to do is get into the bonus round.
When you stop in the three or more of the bonus scatters on any of the Monopoly – The Dream Life’s active pay-lines. Here you’ll be taken to a special second screen sub-game where you get to pick cards off a table with Mr Monopoly. These look a little like the property cards from the classic board-game and they award you with free spins. You get six picks in total – allowing you to discard two cards on your way to collecting four. When you’ve made all your picks then it’s time to go to the special second set of reels where you’ll get to take your spins.
Once you’ve picked up your bonus tickets then its off to the special second set of reels where you’ll get to take the free spins which you’ve accrued. These take place on a characteristic second set of IGT reels that have been specially enhanced for the duration of this feature. Whilst you can’t re-trigger the bonus round as the special feature symbols have been removed from the game, you can still hit cash cascades which are complimented with the addition of several banks of stacked wilds onto the reels here.
Slot Professor Says
So we finally get to see a Monopoly slot machine with Tumbling Reels – great. My question however is what the heck happened to the brilliant board game bonus round that thus far has been a defining characteristic of all Monopoly slots, from Monopoly Plus through to Monopoly On A Roll? Well, I suppose you could count out Monopoly Multiplier, but that's only a fast play game anyway – it doesn't pretend to be a big five reel hitter. This omission has disturbed me, but then on the other hand I suppose you could argue that we've seen enough slots with this kind of feature.
So what do I like about Monopoly – The Dream Life. Well, as anyone who's a regular reader of our reviews will know I am a big sucker for cascading slot machines like Gonzo's Quest and Da Vinci Diamonds, and the Tumbling Reels feature in this game has been particularly well done. The only criticism I've got of this mechanism is that it sometimes seems to be a little bit slow, even on my fast home connection, especially when you want to rip through the spins.
Finally there's the bonus round. This is usually quite a good payer, but I have fallen into it on sessions where its hardly paid out at all. There is a good amount of cash that can be won from this game and yes, you do have to get into this feature as part of your overall strategy – but it's also about the standard wins on the reels here.
