Miss Red was the second game that IGT released in 2014 with an innovative and exciting reel mechanism. This made a delightful departure from the slew of Multi Way Xtra games they released over the 2012 and 2013 period when they were securing deals with the Double Down casino and appeared to be more concerned with tempting the social media market than producing good online slots. However Miss Red, alongside In Bloom, showed the gaming audience that they were prepared to still put their faith in innovative and inventive new releases that had the power to offer a different type of game-play throughout all levels of slot play.
Miss Red has all the visual elements necessary for a great looking slot game. From the vampish Miss Red herself who appears on the reels with a high frequency adding a seductive and sexy silhouette into the reel symbols, through to the hungry looking wolf, everything about this game suggested a high standard of design excellence. All the artwork pulls on the same theme creating an almost fairytale ambience with a decidedly vintage Las Vegas feeling. You would be forgiven for thinking that this slot game might come over just a little bit too confused with this mix of styles and genres, but it actually works so well that you’re instantly endeared to this top title.
The music and audio on Miss Red is also first class. This is a slot game that definitely hams up its take on the fairy tale classic when it comes to the sound effects used in the base game. The designers have obviously struck just the right balance of background tunes and front of house sonics to create the perfect blend of exciting entertainment for your ears. This is a real change from the IGT slots that used to do the rounds with their mediocre, one dimensional sounds and shows how far this developer has come in the 2008-2014 period.
Players will be intrigued by the cool Multi-Way Xtra mechanism that powers the five reel base game on Miss Red. This pays out players for any combination of consecutive symbols no matter where they feature on the grid – for example if a player hits three similar symbols, one on each of the middle three reels, then they’ll be paid out a prize for this three strong combination. Any symbols that add to the combination will add a multiplier to the prize on offer of 1x for every extra symbol. This is a little more advanced than the 243 ways to win on offer from Microgaming, which only pays out a prize for combinations of symbols starting in the leftmost reel.
In addition to the Multi Way Xtra mechanism, Miss Red also features the End to End mechanism. This works in conjunction with two of the symbols on the base game grid – the wolf and the Miss Red symbol. Stop in two wolf symbols or two little red riding hood symbols on the same horizontal line on the grid, and all symbols between them are transformed into wolf or Miss Red symbols as appropriate, with the exception of the wolf symbols in Miss Red End to End combinations and the Miss Red symbols in wold End to End combinations, which become special split symbols. Needless to say when combined with the Multi Way Xtra mechanism this adds a huge amount of winning potential to the reels.
The bonus game on Miss Red is activated when you stop in three of the picnic basket symbols anywhere in view taking you to a second screen sub-game where you have the option to pick one of a number of picnic baskets, revealing the number of free spins you’ll be taking into the bonus. This takes you to an enhanced second set of free spin reels – as is the way with all IGT slots where you can take your spins. Here the End to End feature is still in full effect giving you plenty of chances to ride home those big wins.
Slot Professor Says
Miss Red is another hit slot game from IGT. The End to End symbol structure is immense, but the most important thing about this slot game is the balancing. Too many of the old square style Multi-Way Xtra games – I am talking about Treasures of Troy and Crown of Egypt here – had horrific balancing and bad pay-structures that simply did not offer a good gaming experience. Miss Red is the opposite. Here the Multi Way Xtra system enhances the game-play adding tons of winning potential to the reels that you can actually realise with some healthy prizes from a well-stocked pay-table.
My only criticism of Miss Red is that you very rarely seem to hit combination wins with anything other than the End to End symbols. Not that this is a bad thing – quite the opposite, but it almost makes you wonder why IGT decided to put any other symbols on the reels. You get the feeling it would be a similar game if they had just added blank spaces here. Still this does mean that the End to End system gets used frequently and as there is no need for any player involvement in this mechanism, this means that it adds a huge amount of action and excitement to every spin.
With Miss Red the bonus game feels almost like a little extra add-on. There is so much going on in the base game here you almost forget about the free spins, which means that when you do finally land this bonus it’s a real money spinning surprise. Old online slot machine hands may argue that it is a little disappointing for IGT to come through with another title that features free spins here, but I’d come back at them with the reasoning that this is a classic bonus that never fails to pay out a good prize.
