Playtech are best known for their Marvel slot machines, but this doesn’t mean that’s all they can do. Hot Gems is a slot machine that plays on traditional Vegas themes, putting you down a mine-shaft where you can chip away sat this game’s reels in a search for big money. When you first load this machine up you’ll be greeted by a rather impressive section of cool video that introduces you to the central character, a grizzled old miner who appears at key moments during the action on the reels.

Graphically Hot Gems is not the best Playtech game we’ve ever seen, relying on the old cartoon style casino charm that’s got the attention of so many slots hounds over the years. We’ve got to say that we’re big fans of this kind of artwork as it does have a warm and gentle kind of feeling that’s appropriate for the fun time you’re after from the reels. The background of the game looks like it’s carved out of pure bedrock and the game’s symbols all have a lustre about them that almost makes you feel like you could be down a mine. This is more about the classic slot atmosphere than an immersive play environment, but do you know what – if it’s entertainment you’re after, then this is a great machine to play. The miner sprite jumps all over the reels and the animations are all fast and spot on.

We’re quietly impressed with the sound effects that feature on Hot Gems. Everything comes with a touch of hill-billy here and there’s plenty of fiddles and finger slapping double bass going on to keep your heartbeat in tune with the action. When you hit that spin button the symbols on the reels drop into place with that lovely tinkling noise that’s just spot on and then you’ve got great explosive effects that underline the cascades. In addition to all of this there’s some rather cool alternative music that plays whenever you interact with the game’s miner sprite. Another quality audio production from the Playtech labs.

Your base-game in Hot Gems uses a fixed twenty five pay-line structure that’s spread over the standard five reel casino set up offering you loads of winning chances. You can adjust your bet level to find the perfect wager, but there is no option to select lines and trim your odds. Specials are the bonus scatter and the wild, which both work in the normal way, but the big draw here is what Playtech call the Collapsing Reels mechanism – known generically as cascades by the casino industry. This is where any winning combination of symbols you hit on the reels pays you out a prize, then disappears completely, leaving gaps on the reels into which the symbols above can drop. Needless to say this allows you to win multiple times off a single spin and really take home the big money.

The bonus game on Hot Gem is rather good. In order to activate it you’ll need to hit three of the special free game scatters anywhere in view on the base-game grid, which will take you on to the second set of reels. Here the game takes on a new fiery look that’s indicative of the action you’re about to receive. As you’d expect, the Collapsing Reels mechanism is still in full effect here, only now you’ll get paid out multipliers for successive cascades al a the Gonzo’s Quest base-game, allowing you to really hit some big wins off single spins.

Slot Professor Says

Whilst some people out there might say that Hot Gems pays a little nod in the direction of Da Vinci Diamonds, I probably would not disagree with them, but I also know which machine I'd prefer to play. You don't see many cascading games in the Playtech catalogue and I believe that these guys have done a sterling job on what appears to be a little bit of a deceptive game. On first glance this appear to be a machine that's a little old school in design. It's not till you actually start a big session spinning the reels that you realise all the elements of this game work perfectly together to give you an absolutely awesome playing experience.

Many cascading games don't really offer very good wins as it is assumed you're going to hit multiple combinations off a single spin. However, in Hot Gems this is not the case – the wins you can hit in the base game are very tasty, but to balance this out there's quite a low feature activation. This means that you're very lucky if you do hit the feature and you can bet your bottom dollar that the rewards will really flow when you do finally manage to make your way into the all important bonus round.

I'd even go as far as saying that Hot Gems does a pretty good job of stacking up against slots like Pixies of the Forest and Monopoly – The Dream Life – the big IGT Tumbling Reels games that are featured on this site. There's something about the simplicity of the game-play together with the fantastic awards on offer that makes this without question one of the best cascading slots you can play at any online casino – this is almost as good as the mighty Gonzo's Quest, which in my opinion is still king of the cascades.
