Looking at the Ghostbusters base game, you’ve got a standard casino set up that gives you 30 paylines plus features for a fifty coin bet. The scatters, which hold the key to the game’s two bonus rounds, only appear on the middle three reels, together with a nice acceleration feature when you lock subsequent scatters in place. There’s also a classic wild symbol that’ll help you complete combination wins.
As you’d expect, everything that made the Ghostbusters movie such a hit with the punters appears on the reels of this game, including the legendary Rick Moranis. You’ve got the four legendary ghostbusting heroes, together with the PK meter, the classic ambulance vehicle and the trap box. Alongside this there’s loads of animations, vid screens and everything you could possibly want from a modern looking video slot.
Musically Ghostbusters is a stand out slot machine. It could never have been anything else. The classic Ray Parker Jnr soundtrack plays alongside the action on the reels, taking you right back to 1984. This is such a good piece of audio that the game needs little else to create an awesome atmosphere.
One of the things that we felt was a little unnecessary about the Ghostbusters slot machine was the use of full motion video. Whilst this sort of technology was a real buzz in the late 1990s, making its first appearance on console and computer games, it looks a little outdated here. When you hit a win of more than 400 credits on Ghostbusters, a small TV style viewer appears and plays one of four clips. When you’ve seen them all, you really have seen them all – fortunately there is a close button that allows you to get back to the action on the reels.
There are four randomly awarded bonuses in the Ghostbusters slot machine. These are all accompanied by some ghostly animations on the board. Three use Slimer for their graphics. The first is the random award, where this ugly little green ghost pops up, chows down on a snack and awards you with a cash prize.
The second is the random wild reel feature, this sees our ghostly chum vomiting on the reels. You won’t mind the mess however as once the green bile has drained away, the effected reels will be turned completely wild. The last Slimer mystery bonus sees him appearing and gifting you with a multiplier, which could be as much as four times, on all your prizes achieved on the spin. Finally, the only bonus not to feature Slimer sees a bunch of ghostly hands fly across the slot’s reels to randomly turn a number of symbols into wilds, thus adding to the winning potential of any board.
There are two great bonus games in Ghostbusters. The first is called Ballroom Busters, which is activated with two generic scatters and the Slimer scatter on the middle three reels. This sees you move to a second screen bonus where you get to fire your beam lasers at different parts of the ballroom, to uncover multipliers, with the top prize coming if you can bag the little green ghost himself.
The second bonus is a free spin game. Stop in the two generic scatters together with the Stay Puft marshmallow man scatter to activate this round, which takes place on a second set of reels, with an advanced pay-table and forty pay-lines. Here burning chunks of marshmallow will drop onto the reels and stick in place, acting as wild symbols that can help you complete your wins.
Slot Professor Says
Ghostbusters really is one slick slot machine. It haunts me in my bed at night and won't leave me alone during the day. It's got such a grip on me I'm thinking of calling up Derek Acorah to come and exercise it's supernatural hold on my bank balance. Every since I first clapped eyes on this game, I've not been able to stop playing it.
I'm going to deal with the bad before the good, as I always like to get my feeling out of the way before a feast. You'll see with my Elvis the King review, a slot that was released a few months before Ghostbusters, that I complained about the whole 50 coin bet for 30 lines plus features. I've got to admit that IGT have made this features here a whole lot better than those on Elvis the King, but still... why are we having to pay cash for bonuses? These should just be part of the machine.
So what do I like best about the Ghostbusters slot machine? Well, its got such a great combination of pay-outs, graphics and randomly awarded action, that there's always something to get excited about. I'm not too fussed about the Ballroom Busters bonus, but I absolutely love the way that Slimer can appear on the reels and just suddenly amp up your winnings. It's great when he slimes over the reels and makes them completely wild – this can suddenly spring a truly massive pay-out on you almost as if from no-where.
If it's a rush you're after then this is provided by the awesome Stay Puft free spins bonus. We've all seen thousands of these features, but IGT have really ramped up the fun in Ghostbusters. When those hot marshmallows fall onto the reels and hugely increase your winning chances. You can feel your heart pound right through the duration. A quality bonus for an awesome slot machine.
