If you want your action red hot then Fire Opals is one slot machine that really rocks. Fire Opals, another great slot machine from IGT uses the same reel set up as Siberian Storm and is more or less the same game. It uses a vague, Far East theme, although at times it seems a little confused. We wonder if the game was made specifically for the burgeoning Hong Kong and Macau gaming palaces on this basis.
Graphically, IGT have scored another big hit with Fire Opals. The rich, deep colours and well drawn symbols make it an eye catching title in any casino, whether land based or online and the whole branding of the game possesses just the right amount of gravitas.
Whilst the visuals here are good the thing that really makes Fire Opals stand out above all its competitors is the sound effects. Think wistful haunting pan-pipe music that suggest an erudite air that’s perhaps not entirely suitable for a casino slot, but none the less atmospheric.
The base-game in Fire Opals uses the Multi-Way Xtra system giving players 720 different ways to win off a 40 coin fixed bet. This means the game not only pays out for winning combinations on the reels, but also pays out for the number of permutations of the said winning combination.
I actually give a fuller breakdown of how this system works in our Treasures of Troy review, so if you don’t get the gist you can always refer to this article. It’s also worth noting that in this game you also get paid for symbol combinations that run right to left as well as the conventional left to right directions.
Fire Opals utilises a fair degree of symbol stacking in the base game. This is where similar symbols appear in clusters up and down the reels. This should in theory mean that the big combination wins are more accessible, however we’re in doubt as to the extent of this symbol stacking. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t come into play, just not as often as you’d like from a player perspective.
Finally, there’s the IGT free spin round. What would Fire Opals be without such a bonus? Which is activated when you hit five or more of the game’s red or blue opals on consecutive reels. For every one of these combinations you hit, you’ll be awarded ten free spins. Naturally these take place on the special enhanced reels (how many times have we used that phrase in our lifetimes?) where there’s even more stacks of symbols than the regular game and even more bonus scatters giving you that chance for an all important re-trigger.
Slot Professor Says
Fire Opals is basically the same slot machine as Siberian Storm. IGT have a habit of doing this with their games. It sometimes seems to me that they're trying to make their titles more female friendly, although I don't understand why tigers would only appeal to guys and precious rocks to girls, but then I'm the type of guy who thinks that a fish supper in front of the TV on a friday night is kind of romantic.
So what's there to say in this review that's not been said in the Siberian Storm review? Is there some kind of magic mathematical tinkering that's gone on under the hood in Fire Opals? Unfortunately only a little. This could however be your incentive for playing Fire Opals over its sister slot. Here you get 10 free spins for every combination of bonus scatters you stop in the reels on Fire Opals as opposed to 8 in Siberian Storm.
This is 2 more than you get in Siberian Storm, and these can quickly mount up if you hit a number of permutations to take you into the round. We're talking 25% more spins, which can make all the difference. There is a chance that IGT have rebalanced the reel game so that there's less money here on the reels, or they might have made it harder to hit the bonus. Without exhaustive play-testing its impossible to know from the gambler's perspective.
Saying all that, I do like Fire Opals. It is a good slot and it makes excellent use of the Multi-Way Xtra system. The wins are great when you hit them, but due to the low volatility format you'll need to really hit the big money free spin round to get the best out of this slot. The theme is good, the graphics excellent and the music awesome, what more can I say - it's good, perhaps not great, but definitely worth a few spin sessions from anyone's point of view.
