Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play is the follow up slot machine to the sensational Las Vegas casino slot Da Vinci Diamonds. This sequel game literally takes two reel sets from the first title and places one on top of the other, doubling the game grid, the pay-lines and your chances of picking up a big win. This also opens up a whole host of cool reel features as you’ll see later in this review.
The graphics on Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play have not been changed from those you’ll find in the original. This means that all your favourite Leonardo works of art are on the reels including the Mona Lisa and our favourite, The Lady with the Ermine. This set of classic masterpieces is backed up with four different gems stones, giving you a lovely palette with which to paint out your wins.
Next up is the animations on Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play, which are smooth, seamless and work well with the Tumbling Reels feature. Watch as your symbols delicately drop into place, giving you the impression that each one is both solid and separate in its own right and nothing to do with a conventional reel arrangement. This mechanism works especially well when symbols explode and new symbols fall down into their place.
Audio-wise Da Vinci Diamonds was never a really stand out slot and unfortunately this lack of sonic success has been translated over to Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play. You’ve still got the eerie, almost spooky, reel noises that kind of set you on edge during the reel action and the ascending pitch device that helps ramp up the excitement as you hit successive cascades. There’s nothing wrong with the sound here, but for some reason it just seems to fall short of the mark. What were we looking for? Perhaps some baroque chamber music in line with the time would have done it or just something that captures the majesty of the moment.
What can players expect from the reel game of Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play? Well, as you’d expect the Tumbling Reels feature is still in full effect, allowing you to explode any wins you get on the reels, leaving spaces for the symbols above to drop into, giving you a chance to hit even more combinations off a single spin. Now that you’ve got the double reel arrangement, symbols can drop down from the upper set of reels into the lower – this feature is known as Tumble Thru.
The double reel set in Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play really brings both the Tumbling Reels and the Tumble Thru features to life. It’s very exciting and satisfying to sit and watch the symbols line up after successive cascades, especially when you can see symbols slowly moving into place to align into a huge prize paying combination. The fact that you can see an enlarged grid really makes this title a whole lot more exciting. In other cascading games you have no idea what symbols might drop into play – in Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play you’re watching them line up.
And if all this action in the standard reel game isn’t enough for you, then Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play still has more up its slot machine sleeves. There’s also a free spin game that’s activated when you hit three or more of the Extra Pay-Lines scatters anywhere on the grid. This takes you to a special set of win infused reels, where you’ll not only find more scatters and wilds than you normally get in the standard reel set, but this also opens up an additional 20 pay-lines across both sets of reels. Needless to say this gives you some great chances to make some big money and score in huge cascades across the double reel set.
Slot Professor Says
Perhaps I was a little hard on Da Vinci Diamonds in my last review. Although the format has been decidedly improved by slots like Gonzo's Quest and Secrets of the Phoenix, I should have tipped my hat a little more in the direction of the game that got the whole casino world into cascades in the first place. I know that it can be hard to be the pace-setter in any industry – and Da Vinci Diamonds was the ground-breaker that found its way through the development minefield, into the hearts and minds of a ton of casino gamblers. That's a tough job that deserves a bit of applause and a lot of admiration.
Even though the real art and the whole feel of Da Vinci Diamonds might seem a little outdated when compared to many of the rich media slot productions available online today, the action is still as fresh as ever in Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play. To date I have still not seen another slot that uses the ingenious double grid allowing slot symbols to pass between banks of reels. When you add the free spin game into the mix that opens up an additional 20 pay-lines, you get one of the best takes on this classic bonus feature that I've ever seen.
What about prizes, spin costs and all those tricky details that make a slot well-balanced and highly playable from the mathematical angle? Well you've obviously got to have a bit of cash in the back burner if you're looking to embark on a good old session of Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play. The big money can come on any spin, but then you could argue that this is the case with any slot machine - however the bonus on this game tends to be especially lucrative, so as ever, if you hit that huge money pay-out then take the dollar and run.
