As competition is now hotting up in the online slot machine industry, developers have had to come up with increasingly ingenious systems of play. We’ve seen a number of clever innovations from companies like Net Entertainments, but in 2012-2013 IGT seemed to be lagging behind the pack. We saw countless re-iterations of Multi-Way Xtra slots in the vein of Siberian Storm that offered nothing new. However in 2014 this changed with the introduction of a truly original game in the form of In Bloom. This title uses the new Symbol Burst mechanism to create a truly spectacular and exciting base-game that’s quite unlike anything else you’ve ever played.
Looks-wise In Bloom is an austere and highly detailed slot. This machine captures the English country house theme, with stained glass style graphics across the reels, giving the game a stately feeling and ambiance. The design on the whole is one that is very simple, yet effective, creating a colourful and immersive feeling that works well with the theme of the title. This is a gorgeous slot game that doesn’t rely on state of the art visuals to get its point across, instead delivering a game that has a precisely weighted image that makes it into a stand out title.
Equally the sounds on In Bloom are first class. This machine uses a dulcet English style string melody in the style of Handel to accompany the action on the reels. This comes with sweet flute overtones and rich cello bass to build a stately and impressive atmosphere, where you could close your eyes and imagine that you’re actually at some kind of Midsummer night’s ball. Alongside this the game also uses a number of light woodblock and xylophone noises to punctuate the action on the reels creating a top notch gaming experience.
Getting down to business, this is another IGT slot that requires players to pay a small premium on top of the actual pay-line wager that’s used to fund the forty fixed pay-line structure. This is becoming one of the developer’s standard practices and doesn’t actually disturb the balance of the game in the same ways as it does on other slots, such as Elvis the King. This extra outlay pays for the superb Symbol Burst feature. On the reels there are four types of flower symbols. When the player lands these similar flower symbols in combination on the grid, they have the ability to burst into life adding extra blooms to the stem, with the maximum number of extra blooms dictated by reel position. This allows the player to hit combinations of up to fifteen symbols in the base game. This is a very exciting mechanism that takes the reveal system that’s been used on a few too many slots in the 2013 release calendar and gives it a fresh new update.
There is a base-game scatter win in In Bloom that’s paid out when you hit three of the orb scatters anywhere in view, giving you a return of 60x your total reel bet. These bonus scatters also feature a small butterfly – two or three butterflies anywhere on the reels will activate the garden bonus, and if you land a single butterfly on the middle reel sometimes a single butterfly will fly onto the reels and activate the bonus.
When you activate the In Bloom bonus game you have a choice of four different spin rounds. Unlike other IGT games such as Garden Party and Transformers: Battle for Cybertron, which offer a number of different spins with varying multipliers, this game gives you a choice of flower symbols and free spins. Choose a free spin round based on the four flowers in the base-game – the higher the flower symbol pays, the less spins you’ll receive, then for the duration of the bonus only your chosen flower will appear on the reels.
When you have finished your free spins In Bloom has one more trick waiting for you. This is a special bonus bump feature that pays you out a straight bonus between 1x and 50x your stake, ensuring that you take a very acceptable prize away from this machine’s feature antics.
Slot Professor Says
While many other developers are relying on hugely complex bonus games, with multi-level features, it is refreshing to see that IGT have opted to go in a different direction. In Bloom is a game that manages to give players an incredibly simple mechanism that adds action to every level of the game – this in my book is the key to a good feature. Symbol Burst is surely going to become as widespread as other winning IGT mechanisms such as Stacked Wilds and Tumbling Reels.
Looking at the actual workings of the In Bloom slot game, there are a number of points that I’d like to raise. The first is that the pay-table is suitably trimmed to take the big combinations into account, however, you do seem to hit multiple flower wins all the time and even though these aren’t the biggest payers, this does keep your balance at a decent level. The free spin round can be a little tricky – I can’t really advise as to which of the bonuses is best – it comes down to a choice of whether you’re looking for a high or low variance game.
Many slot games go through a spell of popularity whilst they are still new to the gaming audience, but only a few have what it takes to turn into long term winners. In Bloom is one of these games, packing in a decent reel mechanism, that’s fun, intriguing and has the ability to pay out some very big winners. I can’t recommend this game enough –if you’re a true fan of online slot machines then you’ll be spinning the reels of In Bloom for a long time to come.
