In 2013 IGT seemed to spend most of their time and resources creating more Multi-Way Xtra games like Day of the Dead and Pamplona. They surfaced from this trend in early 2014 with a well designed game in the form of Black Widow. This title appears to draw reference from Microgaming’s Immortal Romance, featuring similar graphics and reel symbols – although we’re sure any similarity is purely coincidence as both are clearly inspired by the whole US TV series trope.
Black Widow is a High 5 Games slot. These are the people that bought you such Las Vegas smash hits as Golden Goddess, Da Vinci Diamonds and Pixies of the Forest. They’re the side of the IGT business that seems to have all the ideas and ingenuity when it comes to top slot machine concepts. This is well reflected in this online slot machine’s clever bonus game mechanism – the Web Capture feature.
The graphics on Black Widow have a distinctly strange feeling to them. You’ve got a very kitsch wallpaper motif forming the background to the reels, which is suggestive of some old school, high class hotel where our femme fatale might be staying. In addition to the standard card symbols on the reels that are adorned with Cluedo-style murder weapons there’s four main character symbols that form the basis of the story-line behind the slot.
Musically, Black Widow has a very low keep feel. The soundtrack is dominated by a heavy bass thud that comes accompanied by a skiffle beat, giving the game a suitable gravitas that sits behind every spin. When the reels rotate, they do so with a dull, low metallic hum that gives the action a surreal, edgy feel. Like all of the High Five Games productions, this is a very well put together slot that blends all the elements of the theme in together perfectly with the visual and sonic experience.
Getting down to business – the base game in Black Widow plays across forty pay-lines on five reels. There’s a special reel mechanism at work here similar to the one in Golden Goddess where a number of super stacks are added to the reels before every spin – this increases the player’s chances of hitting a massive multiple combination across all the pay-lines available on the grid. However, it does mean that the wins on offer have been trimmed down to accommodate this mechanism, and you’re looking at a fixed pay-line structure.
You’ll need to stop in nine bonus symbols on the middle three reels of Black Widow in order to activate the free spin round. This takes you onto a special second set of reels with seven free spins under your belt. During this round any of the three male character symbols you land on the grid will add to an incremental jackpot specific to each character. Then if you’re lucky enough to stop that male characters symbol in the middle stop space of the middle reel – you’ll be awarded the jackpot appropriate for the character. This is known as the Web Capture feature, and if you can stop the Black Widow herself in this space then you’ll win all three male character jackpots.
Slot Professor Says
Black Widow is a hell of an online slot machine. Would you expect any less from those gaming gurus down at High 5 Games? There’s loads of action in the reels and the super stack feature turns every single spin into a real jaw-dropper as you wait to see if you’ve hit a huge multiple combination across the reels. However, just like Golden Goddess, it’s hard to take down a big win from the base-game in this machine as the pay-table has been suitably trimmed to account for all this prize-paying potential.
The bonus feature in Black Widow is a little bit of a weird one. I’ve always loved IGT slots for their free spin rounds, which are generally stacked with wins. The trouble with this bonus round is that you can go on long streaks where you’re hardly paid out. That’s not what I am looking for – the Web Capture feature doesn’t really feel like it fits in so well with the whole free spin concept, which means that this title lacks something for me. Golden Goddess is much more enjoyable with the whole bonus super-stack symbol that seems to almost guarantee some big pay-days from the feature.
Still, Black Widow is definitely playable and with its high production values it is sure to attract the audience of many slot players. Does it have what it takes to become the next Cleopatra, Rainbow Riches or Da Vinci Diamonds? Unlikely, but then very few titles have the stones to take on these classics of the genre, but then there’s definitely fun to be had from the reels of this online slot machine.
