Battlestar Galactica

When you first load up the Battlestar Galactica Slot Machine you’ll be incredibly impressed by this slot machine’s amazing good looks and state of the art graphics.

If you look underneath the reel grid in Battlestar Galactica, you’ll see a blue coloured bar. The more you play and the more you spend, the fuller this gets. When you  fill it completely it through your play, you’re awarded with a new level, which opens up a new range of video clips and reel content, keeping the whole look and feel of the machine completely fresh.

I have never seen anything like this before, and although we’ve reviewed other slots such as Immortal Romance and Monopoly Plus, which feature unlockable game-play content, this is the first time we’ve ever seen this mechanism pulled with visual aspects of a game.

Any online slot that goes to the trouble of creating such a feast for the eyes as Battlestar Galactica  has to back it up with audio to match, and that’s exactly what Microgaming have done here. There’s the big orchestral number from the TV show’s opening credits, backed up by sound-bites of dialogue, crazy space-ship FX and everything you could possibly want to create an immersive sonic spectacular.

The production levels here are beyond brilliant – this is an acoustic presentation par excellence. There are many slots out there that blow it out of the park with the visuals then fail to come up with quality base-game mechanics and bonuses. Fortunately this is not the case here. For starters Battlestar Galactica is a 243 ways to win game that pays you for any combination of adjacent symbols on the reels reading from left to right. This is backed up with a  wild symbol that’ll help you hit the prize paying combinations and a free spin scatter. OK – this isn’t sounding too out of the ordinary thus far, but you wait to see what’s coming next.

First up is the ion storm bonus. This can be randomly awarded at any time during the base game. Here you get to watch as the Battlestar gets caught up in a rare cloud of stellar gas, which can turn between one and five reels completely wild at random. Like many bonuses of this type, sometimes you’ll hit a huge pay-out here, with tons of symbols clustering together to form those big paying combinations and sometimes you’ll simply miss – especially if there aren’t enough connecting symbols between the wild reels.

Alongside the normal base game mode, there are two spectacular base-game modes available in Battlestar Galactica that really do have the power to help you blast out the prizes. These can be awarded at any time, requiring no bonus symbols or reel activity to get them started whatsoever.

Next up is the run mode. Here the reels turn a blueish colour as the Battlestar tries to outrun an attacking Cylon fleet. The reels here now pay-out prizes for combinations reading right to left as well as left to right, doubling your winning potential from the grid. That’s not all either, as there’s a special FTL symbol added to the middle reel. If you can land this anywhere in view then it sparks a special mystery symbol feature that could see your average spin turn into an absolute monster.

When you’re in Battlestar Galactica’s run mode you can trigger the fight mode at any time. Watch as the slot goes on red alert as you turn to face the Cylon menace who’ve been chasing you down. Here up to five random wilds will be added to the reels after every spin and all the standard wilds are changed into special double wilds, counting as two symbols instead of one. This is where you can really get your hands on the big money, as you’ve got a chance to hit combinations that are six and seven symbols strong.

If you still want more action, then there’s a high quality bonus game in Battlestar Galactica, which can be hit when you’re in the standard mode or the run mode. In either mode it’s activated when you hit the three star-fighter scatters anywhere in view, which in the standard mode takes you to a special second set of reels where all wins are trebled and you get fifteen spins. However, you can’t unfortunately re-trigger the bonus here although the scatters are still present. In the bonus game any combination of scatters pays out a prize as opposed to adding more spins to your count.

If you manage to stop in the bonus scatters during the Battlestar Galactica run mode – watch as a pair of large lasers are mounted on the reels and you’re given five free spins.

After every spin a small squad of Cylon fighters will attempt to strafe the reels and your gun batteries return fire. For every enemy ship you knock out  of the sky, you’re awarded a number of additional free spins. Keep on blasting the attackers to extend you bonus ride, where the spoils of war can become extremely lucrative.

Slot Professor Says

Wow, oh my god and all the rest. Just when you think that Microgaming have peaked two years ago with their fabulous Norse wonder-slot Thunderstruck II, they've come out with a production that puts them more than back in the game. Battlestar Galactica is a title that manages to take some of the latest Net Entertainment titles to town with its huge array of graphical action and wonderfully unique reel features. To say I'm impressed by this game would be a slight understatement.

The only title I can really compare Battlestar Galactica to is The Dark Knight, the Mega Moolah inspired progressive jackpot title from the same developer. The difference is that although the Dark Knight really tries to survive on its dark and moody good look, Battlestar Galactica manages to out-do this game in both the visual and the game play aspects. It gets rid of the cinematic backgrounds feature, which let's face it was a bit on the boring side anyway, replacing it with one of the best ideas in slot symbol design since some bright spark came up with the scatter – the unlockable content. This keeps the game fresh at all times.

Finally what I really want as a punter is a game that gives me good action right the way through the base game. As I've said a thousand times before it doesn't matter if there's a brilliant bonus game waiting behind the reels if it takes you most of your bankroll to get there. With Battlestar Galactica the big fun time feeling is right there in the reels and available to you from the moment you hit one of the unique playing modes. This is one of my favourite slots of 2013 and is likely to be one that you're going to be hearing about for some time to come. There's a new king on top of Microgaming mountain.
