Apollo Rising is another game from IGT that uses the classic Wolf Run formula. This combination of large grid mechanics coupled up with stacked wilds on the reels has now been doing the rounds for a number of years and is showing absolutely no signs of becoming tired or boring. In fact you could argue that a big part of this format’s success is the guaranteed wins and big spins that it continually pumps out over the base-game grid keeping players on the edge of their seats with huge wins and monster prizes on offer from every spin.
Visually Apollo Rising relies on stylised graphics from the 1950s set in a grid and background that are completely in tune with the space-aged theme of this slot machine. There’s everything you could want from gorgeous space babes through to multi-coloured space monkeys on the reels, all of which are animated with some red hot effects, plunging you straight into a playing experience that’s addictive and satisfying from the first moment you load it in your browser or on your smartphone.
The music on Apollo Rising is absolutely out of this world. There are tons of different sound effects going on at any given point creating a superb audio texture that lights up the sonics on this slot quite effectively. This makes good use of all the latest synth noises giving you a total space age blast as you ride around the reels. Few slots out there have had this much detail and thought put into the audio palette, creating an exciting and immersive atmosphere for every spin.
Base game-wise Apollo Rising uses a massive grid. This is double the size of the ordinary Wolf Run slots, giving you a huge board to hit wins on every single spin. There are normal single poker symbols available as well as double symbols, helping you land the biggest money available from the slot. There’s a hundred pay-lines of action too, giving you plenty of chances to spell out those vital winning combinations.
Apollo Rising doesn’t use a bonus game. This might disappoint a few slots purists out there, but the mechanism that IGT, the developers, has put in its place will more that satisfy even the most cash hungry of players. Simply stop in a wild on any of the middle three reels and the wild will expand to fill all available vertical stop spaces and award you with a single respin with the wild reel held in place.
These respins can be extremely lucrative, pumping out cash into your bank balance. If you land two or more rising wilds then you’re pretty much guaranteed a number of big money pay-outs where the screen is emblazoned with the graphics and sound effects that now accompany a substantial win. This is the only bonus feature on this slot game and in many ways it is much better than a free spin round, triggering more frequently and pumping out some of the biggest money you’ll find on any slot.
Slot Professor Says
When I first decided to play on this game, I thought it was another remake of a Wolf Run clone in the form of Wolf Rising. However, this game has a whole lot more substance to it, created by the actual removal of the bonus game. Here you can absolutely land a ton of good wins when you hit the wild reel respin mechanism, which can pay out some truly massive wins.
Usually this is the section of the review where I talk about the bonus round – well today that simply isn’t possible. There seems to be a rising tide of games that operate around respin functions with slots like Starburst and Big Bang from Net Entertainment leading the way. It looks like IGT have now decided to follow suit and they’ve absolutely done the business with Apollo Rising, which I could argue is my favourite title in this genre.
This is one of those games where you can risk a lot of money and get a pay-off in a couple of spins. Be very careful as the highly volatile nature of Apollo Rising means that you can land money very quickly, but due to the high spin cost you can equally lose it all in the blink of an eye. Unless you’re playing lowball spins to eek out your money, don’t be afraid to take the money and run.
